Something's Out to Get Me

Something about getting shot at, or in my case expecting to get shot at any minute, left me with a strong awareness of death and the complete impermanence of life.  I dodged the bullet in Vietnam but have known ever since that there's a number with my name on it waiting sometime in the future.  Now that I am well past three score years, that awareness is even more acute.

No doubt that is why I found LoudonWainwright's latest CD, "Older Than My Old Man Now" so appealing.  Wainwright made that transition at age 64.  I did the same at age 56.  Wainwright's 14 songs tell the story in no uncertain terms but always with humor.  In the end, there's nothing we can do about the fact that we are all going to die so we may as well laugh in its face.

Saw him perform at Old Town School of Folk Music last year for a CD release. Sadly, Loudon explained the CDs had not made the trip with him from Milwaukee.

A Complicated man.
