Can We Possibly Do Worse?
Ten years of American government building in Afghanistan and this is what we get?
“Afghans and the world’s Muslims should rise against the foreigners. We have no patience left,” said an Afghan police officer at a checkpoint in central Kabul. He looked at his colleague, who stood next to him, nodding. “We both will attack the foreign military people.”“Afghans and the world’s Muslims should rise against the foreigners. We are so fucked.

Yes — we could stay "engaged" there. As it is, it looks like the West will be out of Afghanistan and therefore out of Pakistan sooner rather than later.
Now, are "We are so fucked."? Not if we learn from this.
Properly, sadly, it's the poor Afghanis and Pakistanis that are so fucked. A decade of trying to build some kind of political process that allows girls to walk to schools without an acid douche seems to be for nought and corruption is mind-boggling.
The optimist in me likes to believe that the countless small changes in these countries might just blosson — once the West is out of there. My 2¢.
Good point. I would like to think we can learn enough to know when and how to disengage. We haven't been particularly good at learning from the past.
And you are correct. For what ever fuckedness America has or will endure, the Afghanis and Pakistanis are so much more fucked.
