About this time--2100 to 2200 hours UTC--on 15 December 1971 I stepped off a troop plane at Bien Hoa Airbase in Vietnam.  I never saw the 15th.  My flight crossed the dateline between the 14th and 16th without notice in the dark of a long, long night over the Pacific.  Local time when we landed was around 0600 hours, right before sunrise which for me was the dawn of nothing I looked forward to.

The day proved to be a long one.
